Lt. Col George Washington Shattuck
Civil War Ancestor of Sidney Gaddy
George W. Shattuck
was born August 28, 1835, in Switzerland County, Indiana. George was the son of Simeon N. and Judith
(Dewitt) Shattuck, and the first of seven children. The Shattuck family moved from Switzerland County, Indiana, to
Lawrence County, Ohio, in 1839. George
Shattuck was reared on the home farm, where he received a common school
education, which was supplemented by two years of study in Ewington
Academy. After leaving that institution
he engaged in teaching, doing successful work in the line during five winter
terms and thereafter giving his attention to agricultural pursuits, in Ohio,
until the inception of the Civil War, when he subordinated all other interests
to the call of the Union and tendered aid in its defense.
On July 4, 1861,
George W. Shattuck enlisted, for three months, as a member of a company known
as the First Independent Cavalry, commanded by Capt. John S. George. At the expiration of his term he received an
honorable discharge, after which he returned home.
Soon afterward, on
November 6, 1861, he reenlisted, becoming a member of Company H, Sixth Ohio
Cavalry, being mustered in as Second Lieutenant, to which office he received
his commission December 16, 1861. He
was, for a brief period of time, on the Staff of General Sigel, and served
under General Sheridan. For gallant and
meritorious service he was later promoted to First Lieutenant on May 9, 1864,
to Captain on November 12, 1864, Major on April 8, 1865, and to Lt Col on July
30, 1865. He was Mustered out with
Company on August 7, 1865. He received
a gunshot wound in the right foot at an engagement at Ladd's Farm, Virginia. In the Battle of Dinwiddle Courthouse,
Virginia, March 31, 1865, he received a severe wound, which incapacitated him
for further field service, as the war closed before he had recuperated.
On November 6, 1861,
George Shattuck married Miss Eliza Little, who was born in Ireland, and who was
a resident of Ohio at the time of their marriage. This union produced 5 children born between 1864 and 1871.
After the Civil War
Lt Col Shattuck returned to his home in Ohio, where he was engaged in farming
until 1870, when he was appointed railroad station-agent at Center Station, in
Lawrence County, where he remained until 1872.
In 1872 the Shattuck family moved to Vernon County, Wisconsin, where
they settled in the town of Stark.
Lt. Col George W.
Shattuck died at the home of his daughter, Mary Jane, Mrs. Charles Henry
Steinmetz, in R.R. LaFarge Wisconsin, on April 26, 1913, at 10:30 a.m.
