On July 26, 2004, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Pvt. Richard Taylor, Camp 53, met at 7pm for the monthly meeting.  Brother Gordon Cottrell opened the meeting with prayer.  Brother Talbot Hackett led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and Brother Brian Hogan led the members in the American Creed.

 

Camp business: 

The Camp discussed being in the Huntsville Veterans Day Parade on November 11.  Brother Pearce to look into the requirements and sign the Camp up to participate.

 

Brought to the attention of the members is renovation of the General Wheeler home.  The state wishes to renovate the Visitor Center before and renovations on the actual home. 

 

Brother Hogan has ordered a headstone for Lt Colonel Robert Ross Townes, who is buried in the Athens City Cemetery, beside his wife.  At a time to be determined the Camp will hold a ceremony at the grave of LTC Townes.

 

At the August meeting the Camp wishes to nominate officers for 2004-2005.

 

Sickness and Distress:  Please keep Brother Glenn Bracken in mind as he recovers from a mild heart attack.  Also keep in your prayers the family of Waymon Burke on the passing of his mother, Frances McAllister Burke, the great grand daughter of Pvt John G. McAllister, after a long battle with cancer.
