Camp Commander, Brother Edward Milam, opened the August meeting of the Richard Taylor Camp #53 SUVCW, at 7:00p.m., 28 January 2002. After opening with prayer, led by Brother Gordon Cottrell, Brother Steve Pearce led the Camp in the Pledge to the American flag and Brother David Milam led the American Creed.

Old business: Minutes from the previous meeting were approved and the Treasurer’s report was approved.

Since the last meeting, in October 2001, membership certificates were granted to Brothers Don Davis and Terence Foote.

Events that Camp members had participation in were also discussed. Special thanks was given to those that participated in the On November 11, 2001 luncheon and ceremony inducting the new officers and initiating new members

The afternoon of November 11, at 3pm, the Private Richard Taylor dedicated a restored headstone to Captain James H. Bone. The ceremony was held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville Alabama.

On November 12, 2001, the Camp participated in the Huntsville Veterans Day Parade. Brother Glenn Bracken reserved the Camp a position in the parade. Brother Joe Johnson procured a vehicle to transport the Camp in the parade held November 12.

New Business: Camp Commander presented a membership certificate to Brother Geoffrey B. Michael.

Discussion was held, with no final decisions made, on Camp events in April and May 2002. Included in the discussions were the Memorial Day activities, Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll, and Spring Memorial April 27 in Chattanooga.

Discussion was also held on the Tennessee Department Encampment to be held in Madison, March 1-2, 2002. Brother Pearce will provide old Camp newsletters and ancestor write-ups that have been provided. Also on display will be handouts on the history of the camp and pictures of various Camp activities.

Brother Davis discussed the history museum in Huntsville that could display various Civil War artifacts if the Camp has any to submit.

Brother Hogan discussed the deterioration of various books in the Genealogy section of the Madison County Public Library located in Huntsville Alabama. One particular book, "Ohio in the Civil War," is in need of rebinding. The Camp voted to donate $50.00 to the library to assist in binding this book. The Camp Treasurer, Brother Pearce, made the donation on behalf of the Camp.

Seeing no additional discussions at 8:40, the Camp Chaplain, Brother Gordon Cottrell, closed the meeting with prayer.

Sickness and distress: Real Daughter Sammy Mason passed away.

Brother Pearce asked the Camp Brothers to provide write-ups on their Union Ancestor along with a picture if one is available. Brother Pearce has a scanner if someone has a picture that needs to be converted into an electronic format.
