The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War monthly meeting was held June 27 and was opened at 7:00 p.m. by Commander Hackett.  Brother Cottrell gave the invocation, Brother Hogan led the camp in the Pledge of Allegiance and Brother Burke led the Camp in Americas Creed.

In attendance were Commander Hackett, Senior Vice Commander Burke, Junior Vice Commander Johnson, Sec/Treasurer Hintze, Brothers Wright, Greene, Billings, Gaddy, Davis and Cottrell.  Also in attendance were new members Tod Jenness, Brian Jenness, Keith Bennett and Joseph Stegmaier. Guests included Tod Jenness’s wife, two daughters and father and Rev. Nolan, new pastor of Highlands Methodist Church.

There were no minutes to read since the May meeting was replaced with the Memorial Day ceremony.

Brother Hackett presented Brother Cottrell with the World War II medal.

Brother Hogan read an email concerning Huntsville’s bicentennial.  There will be a celebration around the town square on Thursday July 28.  Our camp was invited to take part and Brother Burke agreed to take the lead in planning.

The Department Encampment was discussed.  It was agreed to have it the last weekend in January  (January 28) at the Bevill Center.  The Bevill Center will have rooms at $55/night and will have a buffet for $18 on Saturday.

Flags were discussed.  The Camp was given an American flag by the Veterans Memorial Museum.  A Camp flag will cost $400 from the Department of Ohio.  The Camp does not have the money to purchase a flag but some of the Brothers have offered to contribute.  Brother Hintze was asked to check with the National Quartermaster (Brother Wheeler) to see if National has the Camp Logo so we can look at a less expensive alternative.

It was then discussed to move the July meeting up to July 11.  The topic will be the reorganizing of our Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) Company.

The initiation of four new members was then held using the long procedure.  Acting as guides were Brothers Davis and Gaddy.  Tod Jenness was initiated as a new hereditary member, his son, Brian, was initiated as a Junior member and Joseph Stegmaier and Keith Bennett were initiated as Associate members.

After the initiation, Brother Cottrell closed the meeting with the benediction and the camp sat down to a beef stew dinner courtesy of Brother Hackett.

I hope to see everyone on the July 11.

Respectfully submitted in F, C, and L,

Talbot Hackett-Commander
