Camp Commander, Brother Edward Milam, opened the August meeting of the Richard Taylor Camp #53 SUVCW, at 7:00p.m., 25 February 2002. After opening with prayer, led by Brother Gordon Cottrell, and Brother Joe Johnson led the Camp in the Pledge to the American flag and the American Creed.
Old business: Minutes from the previous
meeting were approved and the Treasurer’s report was approved. Treasurer’s report was distributed at the
meeting for review.
New Business:
Discussion was held,
with no final decisions made, on Camp events in April and May 2002. Included in the discussions was the Memorial
Day activities, Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll, and Spring Memorial April 27 in
Chattanooga.
Discussion was also held on the Tennessee Department Encampment to be
held in Madison, March 1-2, 2002.
Brother Pearce will provide old Camp newsletters and ancestor write-ups
that have been provided. Also on
display will be handouts on the history of the camp and pictures of various
Camp activities.
Seeing no additional discussions at 8:00, the Camp Chaplain, Brother
Gordon Cottrell, closed the meeting with prayer.
Sickness and distress:
Brother Joe Johnson’s mother is ill and in nursing care. Brother Johnson’s father is recovering from
a stroke. Brother Gordon Cottrell’s
sister is ill with Lou Gehrig disease.
Brother Geoffrey Hintze will be having shoulder surgery on March 1.
Camp Activities:
On March 1-2, 2002 the SUVCW Department of Tennessee,
held it’s annual encampment at the Radisson hotel in Madison Alabama. The Camp displayed pictures of various camp activities,
write-up of our various Union ancestors, and history of the Camp. The following Camp individuals were elected
to hold Department of Tennessee offices.
Brother Milam was
elected Patriotic Instructor and to serve on the executive council, Brother
Steve Pearce was elected Secretary/Treasurer, Brother Hogan was elected Graves
Registration Officer, and Brother Gaddy was elected Color Bearer.
Brother Pearce asked the Camp Brothers to provide write-ups on their
Union Ancestor along with a picture if one is available. Brother Pearce has a scanner if someone has
a picture that needs to be converted into an electronic format.

25, 2002, 7pm, Highlands United Methodist Church.
