I would like to thank everyone that participated in the Madison Street Festival Parade on October 1st.  Other than we need a little marching practice, I thought everything went fine.  Special thanks go to Brother Wright for decorating his pick-up and giving Brothers Cottrell and Johnson a place to ride.

Brother Hogan and I attended the Honor Court for James Poole, Jr at the Boy Scout Troop 235 in Athens on Oct 5th.  We presented James with the SUVCW Certificate of Achievement for attaining the level of Eagle Scout.

The reenactment of Bushwhacker Johnson’s surrender came off without a hitch.  With the help of the Rick Somers of the 19th  Alabama and 51st Alabama re-enactors, we had enough of both sides to cover everything in Brother Milam’s script.

A reminder that our October meeting has been moved to the 24th due to Halloween falling on the last Monday of the month and that our annual elections will be held at that time. I hope everyone will be attending.

Minutes for September SUVCW Meeting

The Meeting was called to order by Brother Hackett at 7 PM.  Brother Cottrell gave the invocation, Brother Jenness led the Camp in the Pledge of Allegiance and Brother Wright led the American’s Creed.

The August minutes were read and approved after Brother Hogan made a correction to the amount of money recorded from the sale of raffle tickets.

The Madison Street Festival parade was discussed and it was decided that Brothers Hackett, Hogan, Greene, and Todd and Brian Jenness would form the marching unit, carrying the National Colors and the SVR flag.  Brother Wright would provide his pick-up for those who would not be marching.

The Camp decided to have a special donation box available at the Madison County Heritage Days Festival to collect money for Alabama victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Camp volunteers to participate in the Bushwhacker Johnson surrender were Brothers Greene, Hogan, Hackett, and Todd and Brian Jenness.

Brother Hackett stated that he had been in contact with Mrs. Henry, the Great Grand daughter of Pvt. William Fann, a member of the 4th TN Mounted Infantry.  Mrs. Henry had contacted the Camp earlier this year, requesting an Honor Guard to dedicate his new headstone. She is no real rush to get it done and will work around our Camp schedule.

The Eagle Scout presentation for James Poole had been postponed due to Hurricane Katrina. It is scheduled to take place on October 5th.  Brothers Hackett and Hogan will make the presentation.

Brother Hackett reported that the plans Department Encampment are coming along. Most of the details have been taken care of and now it’s a matter of response from the Camps in the Department.

The Camp was reminded of the annual elections are next month and that maximum participation is encouraged.

Brother Hackett announced that the formation of the Major General Joe Hooker Camp #54 in Double Springs is well underway.  The hope is to have everything completed to hold their charter ceremony at the Department Encampment on January 28th.

The question of a Camp Christmas gathering was also briefly brought up for further discussion after the Camp Brothers have had time to think it over.

Brother Cottrell closed the meeting with the benediction.

Hope to see everyone on the October 24, at the next meeting.

Respectfully submitted in F, C, and L,

Talbot Hackett-Commander
